Understanding Spin Axis Data

What is Spin Axis?

Spin axis refers to the axis tilt on the ball to determine the direction of curvature in the ball flight. It is a function of the delta between club face angle and club path. So, while spin rate tells you how fast the ball is spinning, spin axis indicates the direction of that spin measured in degrees (eg. 4.2R).

The higher the ball speed immediately after impact, the more the ball will curve throughout its flight with a given spin axis.

How Spin Axis is Measured

FlightScope utilizes patented Fusion Tracking Technology – a unique combination of radar and camera – to measure the ball's rotation in 3D after impact. By analyzing this data, FlightScope calculates the spin axis angle in degrees.

Why Spin Axis is Important

Spin axis is an advanced metric that helps golfers understand how spin rate translates into ball direction. The difference between face angle and club path will tilt the spin axis.

Here's how to leverage it for more precise control:

  • For a draw (right-handed golfer curving the ball left), aim for a spin axis tilted slightly to the left.

  • For a fade (right-handed golfer curving the ball right), aim for a spin axis tilted slightly to the right.

  • For a straight shot, aim for a spin axis of less than 2 degrees.

Spin axis will also be tilted by off center impact due to horizontal gear effect.

For a right handed golfer:

  • A toe hit will tilt the spin axis to the left (draw).

  • A hit towards the heel will tilt the spin axis to the right (fade).

  • Impacts with more extreme face angles, like toe or heel hits, generate less gear effect on the spin axis.

How to use it for improvement

  • Improve Ball Flight: By understanding how swing mechanics and clubface contact affect spin axis, you can make adjustments to achieve your desired flight path. A slightly leftward spin axis can promote a draw trajectory, while a slightly rightward spin axis can encourage a fade trajectory.

  • Diagnose Ball Striking Issues: A spin axis tilted excessively left or right might indicate off-center hits (toe or heel strikes) that can reduce control and lead to unwanted hooks or slices (for a right-handed golfer).

Key Takeaway

Spin axis is an advanced metric that helps golfers understand how spin rate translates into ball direction. By understanding how swing mechanics and clubface contact affect spin axis, you can make adjustments to optimize shot shaping and overall ball flight control.
